The Weekly Hill Update

Below is this week’s congressional update by BakerHostetler’s Federal Policy team. We’ll continue to post in weeks when both chambers of Congress are in session.

HEADLINES

• Congress is in Washington for the final week that both chambers are in session before the midterm election.
• Fears over artificial intelligence have reached Capitol Hill after executives from leading companies sounded alarms and vowed to slow development.
• FBI Director Kash Patel headlines administration officials testifying on Capitol Hill this week.

HOUSE

• The House plans to take up Senate-passed legislation imposing sanctions on Russia and Iran.
• The Appropriations Committee will hold a Federal Aviation Administration oversight hearing tomorrow with Administrator Bryan Bedford.
• Also tomorrow, the Science, Space, and Technology Committee will hold a hearing on technological innovation in disaster prevention.

SENATE

• The Senate will attempt to advance stalled cryptocurrency legislation.
• Tomorrow, the Judiciary Committee will hold an oversight hearing with Patel.
• Wednesday, the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee will hold a hearing on several health nominees, including Chris Klomp to be deputy secretary of Health and Human Services.

WHITE HOUSE

• Today, President Donald Trump is participating in policy meetings at the White House.
• Wednesday, he will travel to North Carolina for campaign events.
• The White House is preparing for Chinese President Xi Jinping’s planned visit to Washington next week.
