The Weekly Hill Update

Below is this week’s congressional update by BakerHostetler’s Federal Policy team. We’ll continue to post in weeks when both chambers of Congress are in session.

HEADLINES

• President Donald Trump will travel to China for meetings with President Xi Jinping.
• The Senate plans to vote on Kevin Warsh’s nomination to chair the Federal Reserve Board of Governors.
• Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth will testify at budget hearings in the House and Senate.

HOUSE

• The House will hold floor votes tomorrow through Friday, focusing on legislation to support law enforcement during Police Week.
• Budget hearings include Hegseth, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Dan Caine, and Comptroller Jules Hurst of the Defense Department testifying together at the Appropriations Defense Subcommittee tomorrow.
• Wednesday, the Energy and Commerce Energy Subcommittee will hold a hearing on permitting for electricity transmission infrastructure.

SENATE

• The Senate will take up Warsh’s nomination to chair the Fed.
• Hegseth and Caine will testify at the Appropriations Defense Subcommittee tomorrow, among several cabinet officials appearing before the Appropriations Committee.
• Also tomorrow, the Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee will hold a hearing on the fertilizer industry.

WHITE HOUSE

• Today, Trump is participating in a maternal health event and hosting the college football national champion Indiana Hoosiers at the White House.
• Trump and Xi are set to meet Thursday and Friday in Beijing for extensive talks.
• Negotiations between the U.S. and Iran appear deadlocked, with uncertainty over the next steps.
