Happy new year. Below is this week’s congressional update by BakerHostetler’s Federal Policy team. We’ll continue to post in weeks when both chambers of Congress are in session.
HEADLINES
- Lawmakers return for the first week of the Second Session of the 119th Congress.
- Washington is reacting to President Donald Trump’s decision to launch a special operations mission leading to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
- Trump will meet with House Republicans Tuesday in Washington.
HOUSE
- The House returns tomorrow, voting on a three-year extension of enhanced premium tax credits for Affordable Care Act health plans, a vote that was forced by Democrats’ discharge petition.
- The Education and Workforce Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions will hold a hearing Wednesday on retirement policy.
- Thursday, the Science, Space, and Technology Committee will hold a hearing on chemistry competitiveness.

SENATE
- The Senate plans to resume confirmation votes on Trump’s nominees, and may vote on a resolution requiring congressional authorization of any additional military action against Venezuela.
- Wednesday, the Judiciary Subcommittee on Federal Courts, Oversight, Agency Action, and Federal Rights will hold a hearing on judicial impeachment.
