Lawmakers return for the first week of the Second Session of the 119th Congress.

Washington is <a href="https://punchbowl.news/article/foreign-policy/congress-venezuela/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reacting</a> to President Donald Trump’s decision to launch a special operations mission leading to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

Trump will meet with House Republicans Tuesday in Washington.

The House <a href="https://www.majorityleader.gov/schedule/weekly-schedule.htm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">returns</a> tomorrow, voting on a three-year <a href="https://www.congress.gov/congressional-record/volume-171/issue-191/house-section/article/H4668-3?s=1&amp;r=12" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">extension</a> of enhanced premium tax credits for Affordable Care Act health plans, a vote that was <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2025/12/21/hakeem-jeffries-obamacare-subsidy-extension-00702216" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">forced</a> by Democrats’ discharge petition.

The Education and Workforce Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions will hold a <a href="https://edworkforce.house.gov/calendar/eventsingle.aspx?EventID=412971" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hearing</a> Wednesday on retirement policy.

Thursday, the Science, Space, and Technology Committee will hold a <a href="https://science.house.gov/hearings?ContentRecord_id=81CB6E76-A101-46D1-AB85-E1342B3BE658" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hearing</a> on chemistry competitiveness.

The Senate plans to resume confirmation <a href="https://www.senate.gov/legislative/floor_activity_pail.htm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">votes</a> on Trump’s nominees, and <a href="https://rollcall.com/2026/01/03/congress-poised-to-weigh-in-on-venezuela-campaign/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">may vote</a> on a resolution requiring congressional authorization of any additional military action against Venezuela.

Wednesday, the Judiciary Subcommittee on Federal Courts, Oversight, Agency Action, and Federal Rights will hold a <a href="https://www.judiciary.senate.gov/committee-activity/hearings/impeachment-holding-rogue-judges-accountable-01-07-2026" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hearing</a> on judicial impeachment.

The Trump administration is <a href="https://www.wsj.com/world/americas/after-maduro-ouster-trump-takes-on-the-risks-of-governing-venezuela-d1ac75d4?mod=WSJ_home_mediumtopper_pos_3" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">working</a> to stand up a temporary government in Venezuela following Maduro’s capture.

Trump tomorrow will <a href="https://x.com/jakesherman/status/2007519930585960833?s=43&amp;t=sA4A-aCOvAExOC1uQXqpTQ" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">meet</a> with House Republicans at the Kennedy Center in Washington.

Thursday, the White House will <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/white-house-present-plans-trumps-east-wing-ballroom-january-2025-12-25/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">present</a> Trump’s plans for a White House East Wing ballroom.
