The Weekly Hill Update

Below is this week’s congressional update by BakerHostetler’s Federal Policy team. We’ll continue to post in weeks when both chambers of Congress are in session.

HEADLINES

• Congress returns from the Fourth of July recess with Democrats in an unprecedented political crisis over whether President Joe Biden should continue to run for a second term.
• Biden will host NATO leaders in Washington.
• The congressional hearing schedule is highlighted by appearances by Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Fed Chair Jerome Powell, and both the Federal Communications Commission and Federal Trade Commission.

HOUSE

• The House will hold floor votes tonight through Thursday, including on legislation requiring proof of citizenship for voter registration.
• The Financial Services Committee will hold hearings with Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen tomorrow, and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell Wednesday.
• The Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Communications Commission will appear tomorrow in separate subcommittee hearings at the Energy and Commerce Committee.

SENATE

• The Senate will be in session throughout the week.
• Powell will also present the Fed’s Semi-Annual Monetary Policy Report to the Senate Banking Committee tomorrow.
• Hearings at the Finance Committee and Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee will focus on childcare and costs for families.

WHITE HOUSE

• Biden’s nomination for a second term hangs in the balance as a growing number of Democrats call for him to withdraw following his disastrous debate performance on June 27.
• U.S. allies are also watching closely as the president hosts this week’s NATO summit in Washington.
• Biden is currently scheduled to close his week with campaign activities in Detroit.
