The Weekly Hill Update

Below is this week’s congressional update by BakerHostetler’s Federal Policy team. We’ll continue to post in weeks when both chambers of Congress are in session.

HEADLINES

• As Congress enters its final week of 2023, the narrative focuses more on what lawmakers have not accomplished than on what they have.
• Both chambers are set to take up the annual Defense policy legislation before departing for the holidays.
• President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine will visit the White House and the Capitol, pleading for additional aid to support Ukraine’s fight against Russia.

HOUSE

• The House will hold floor votes tonight through Thursday, including the Fiscal Year 2024 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) and a resolution formalizing an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.
• The Financial Services Capital Markets Subcommittee will hold a hearing tomorrow with self-regulatory organizations.
• Also tomorrow, the Foreign Affairs Oversight Subcommittee will hold a hearing with Commerce Department officials on export controls.

SENATE

• The Senate is scheduled to be in session today through Thursday, also voting on the NDAA.
• Tomorrow, Zelensky will attend an all-senators meeting, before meeting with House Speaker Mike Johnson.
• Thursday, the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee will hold a hearing on diabetes.

WHITE HOUSE

• Biden is in Philadelphia today to tout his support for firefighters, and will return to celebrate a Hanukkah reception at the White House this evening.
• Tomorrow, Biden will host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to “underscore the United States’ unshakeable commitment to supporting the people of Ukraine as they defend themselves against Russia’s brutal invasion.”
• Wednesday, the president will speak at the President’s National Infrastructure Advisory Council meeting.
