Below is this week’s congressional update by BakerHostetler’s Federal Policy team. We’ll continue to post in weeks when both chambers of Congress are in session.

HEADLINES

  • House Republicans are desperate to elect a new speaker, with the chamber remaining in turmoil entering the fourth week since Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., was voted out of the position.
  • As Israel prepares a ground invasion against Hamas, Washington is working to protect hostages and prevent a broader war, while also preparing a package of military and humanitarian aid.
  • President Joe Biden will host Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the White House.

HOUSE

  • Republican candidates for speaker will make their case to colleagues tonight, with votes this week in conference and on the House floor to follow.
  • The House Oversight Committee tomorrow will hold an oversight hearing with Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Danny Werfel.
  • Also tomorrow, the Foreign Affairs Committee will hold a hearing titled “Friend and Ally: U.S. Support for Israel After Hamas’ Barbaric Attack.”

SENATE

  • The Senate will be in session tomorrow through Friday, voting on Biden’s judicial nominees and possibly beginning consideration of a package of funding for Israel, Ukraine, and border security.
  • The Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday will take up the nomination of Jack Lew to be ambassador to Israel.
  • The Energy and Natural Resources Committee on Thursday will hold a hearing on offshore energy policy.
