Below is this week’s congressional update by BakerHostetler’s Federal Policy team. We’ll continue to post in weeks when both chambers of Congress are in session.
HEADLINES
• Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has teed up a procedural vote on bipartisan infrastructure legislation – despite the details of the bill not being finalized by senators.
• Schumer is separately pressing his caucus to reach agreement this week on a budget resolution to set up passage of Democrats’ other priorities in a reconciliation bill, the second part of his two-track strategy.
• President Joe Biden this week will host his second cabinet meeting and also host King Abdullah of Jordan at the White House.
HOUSE
- The House reconvenes for its first floor votes this month, including bipartisan legislation to enhance environmental regulation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, known as PFAS.
- The House Foreign Affairs Committee will hold a hearing Tuesday on the ongoing mass protests in Cuba.
- Also Tuesday, the Energy and Commerce Committee will hold a hearing titled “Stopping Digital Thieves: The Growing Threat of Ransomware.”

SENATE
- The Senate plans to continue votes on Biden’s judicial nominees, with Schumer setting a procedural vote Wednesday on the bipartisan infrastructure bill.
- The Senate Armed Services Committee will take up its fiscal year 2022 National Defense Authorization Act.
- The Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee will host a hearing on the COVID-19 response with Centers for Disease Control Director Rochelle Wolensky, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Anthony Fauci, Food and Drug Administration Acting Commissioner Janet Woodcock, and Assistant Health and Human Services Secretary for Preparedness and Response Dawn O’Connell.
